What is Beneficial Bacteria?
Beneficial bacteria are microorganisms that naturally occur in streams, ponds, and water gardens. Bacteria are the key ingredient in any biological filter, and are what make a biological filter ‘biological’. Without bacteria, a biological filter would not remove organic waste and pollutants from the water.
This bacterium is responsible for maintaining healthy, crystal clear water. Beneficial bacteria consume ammonia (from fish waste) and other organic matter (sludge). They convert deadly ammonia into nitrites and then into harmless nitrates and nitrogen which is an essential part of pond filtration.
